Misa Azteca

A Modern, Symphonic Oratorio

Text & Translation

The text and structure for Misa Azteca contains text from both the Latin liturgical texts of the Mass, as well as Aztec poetry from the Cantares Mexicanos. The translation of the Nahuatl (the language of the Aztecs) has been graciously provided by Dr. Fermín Herrera.

With compassion, Life Giver governs people and allows people to live their lives. In his bounty, Life Giver fosters friendship. In time the Only God, Life Giver, will show us mercy.

Icelteotl
I say it: I consider that nothing is like being an orphan. How will my heart rest? How will my sadness cease?

Is my father still there by chance?
Is my mother still there by chance?
Will they still be waiting for me?
Will they calm my heart there?
Will I not completely end being an orphan?

How do you view us, Oh, only God? This is our nature, in this way, we humans wither and die
Where we will go?

I was crying because you are neglectful
You are mocking us, we are nothing

You consider us to be nothing
You make us disappear, you lay us to waste
Where we will go?

Nothing that we utter here is true
What we speak on earth is like a dream, as if we arise from sleep
No one speaks the truth here.

The souls of the just are in the hand of God
and the torment of malice shall not touch them
in the sight of the unwise they seemed to die
but they are in peace.

You’re creating these songs of yours in heaven. Oh God! And what would you require? Would you slacken?
Conceal your grandeur and your glory here on earth?
What would you require?

Eternal rest give to them
Where one does not die, Let me go
and let perpetual light shine upon them.
May I never die.
May I never perish
Let me go

Eternal rest give to them
Oh, Only God!
IV. Credo
I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God of God, Light of Light, true God of true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; by Whom all things were made. Who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven. And became incarnate by the Holy Ghost of the Virgin Mary. He was crucified also for us, suffered and was buried. And the third day He rose again and ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of the Father. And He shall come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead, of Whose kingdom there shall be no end. I believe in the Holy Ghost, the Lord and giver of Life, proceeding from the Father and the Son. Who together is adored and glorified: Who spoke through the Prophets. I believe in one holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one baptism for the remission of sins. And I look for the resurrection.

Holy, Holy is the Lord, God of the Universe.

Let us drink of the delicious flower-water spring in Paradise, our home, Heaven in the form of a flower-laden earth. The flowers that bear the dew of life emit their fragrance that pleases the heart, in our home, the place of plenty. Where lordship and sovereignty are exalted. The sunflowers are blossoming in the land of abundance.

Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God of hosts Full are the heavens and the earth of the glory of Thee Hosanna in the highest

VII. Salve Regina
Salve, Regina, Mater misericordiae, vita, dulcedo, et spes nostra. Ad te clamamus exsules filii Hevae, ad te suspiramus, gementes et flentes in hac lacrimarum valle.

Ut digni efficiamur promissionibus Christi.
Hail, holy Queen, Mother of Mercy, our life, our sweetness and our hope.To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve; to thee do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this valley of tears. Turn then, most gracious advocate, thine eyes of mercy toward us; and after this our exile, show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus. O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary.

There is a crimson mist of roseate swans there beyond in your home, Oh, Santa Maria. Turquoise swans, all the birds, are cackling. And this is how you’re prayed to, Santa María.
Ave María! O lady, noble lady, right here we’re praising you with love.
There’s singing in this House of Flutes-and we are singing!
What flower is this that lies in fragrance? It gleams incarnadine like a roseate swan, it seems!

Pray for us O holy Mother of God,
that we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

Go, the Mass is finished To God be the thanks

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was made nothing that was made: in him was life, and the life was the light of men; and the Light shineth in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it. And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us: and we saw His glory, the glory as of the Only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.

CHORUS

Why compose in vain, I who sing with sorrow
With my poems made in remembrance of princes? Precious bracelets, precious turquoise gems, precious birds. To those who were famous, who were famed on earth, whose fame and glory still resound?

Where will we truly go? We have come only to be born. Our real home is where there is no flesh, where there is always life and it never ends.

CHORUS

Alleluia, The God of Far and Near, Alleluia
